The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized how important it is to associate the right environments with the right activities. This is my treadmill desk, the best productivity tool I’ve ever discovered.
I’ve walked over 7,000 miles while working at this desk, and in the process, wrote the majority of my portion of the book I co-authored with D.P. Knudten called ROTOMA: The ROI of Social Media Top of Mind.
The most operative part of that last paragraph is in the first sentence: “working.”
When I step on my treadmill desk, there’s no question of what I’ll do first, last, or during. This time is reserved for creative writing, an output of which you’re reading right now. This association is critical because it leaves nothing to imagination, except for the writing itself. No email, no goofing off…just creative work.
Whether it’s a specific desk, a seat on a airplane, a certain coffee shop, or even a particular time of day, where have you found yourself the most productive?
Was the association you created with that environment deliberate?
Or did it happen by accident?
